For more than 120 years, the Ukrainian House in Przemyśl has been a place for a community to meet, organise, learn, create and support one another.

Construction began in 1902. The building was financed entirely through contributions from Ukrainian institutions, organisations and private individuals and opened its doors in 1904.

With nearly 2,000 square metres of space and a theatre for around 400 people, it became one of the most important Ukrainian community institutions in the region.

For decades it was home to cultural, educational, social, charitable and economic organisations.

Continuity

A house that survived.
A community that returned.

The history of the Ukrainian House reflects the turbulent history of Ukrainians in this region.

1945

The Ukrainian National House Society was dissolved and the building was nationalised. Between 1945 and 1947, the Ukrainian population of south-eastern Poland was subjected to displacement and deportation.

1956

As Ukrainians gradually returned to Przemyśl, part of the building once again became available for Ukrainian community activity.

2011

On 21 March 2011, after more than sixty years, the Ukrainian House finally returned to Ukrainian hands.

The Ukrainian House today

History lives here.
But this is not a museum.

Today, the Ukrainian House is once again a living community centre.

It is a place for Ukrainian culture, education and civic activity, but also a space for Polish-Ukrainian dialogue and international cooperation.

Our spaces host cultural events, meetings, workshops, exhibitions, community initiatives and humanitarian programmes.

Humanitarian response

When the world changes,
a community house must change with it.

Since 24 February 2022, when Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Ukrainian House has had to transform its activities.

From the first days of the war, it became a place where people fleeing violence could find shelter, food, medical assistance and, above all, a sense of safety and hope.

The Ukrainian House became a place of practical support for people fleeing the war in Ukraine.

What help looks like

A bed for the night. A wheelchair. Medicine. A conversation. A safe place. A person who answers the phone.

Culture

A community needs more than safety.
It needs culture, language and a place to belong.

Our programme includes literary, artistic, educational and community events, international meetings and initiatives bringing together people from Poland, Ukraine and beyond.

Culture allows a community to preserve memory while creating something new.

For us, Ukrainian culture in Poland is not only heritage. It is something alive.

What we are building

A 120-year-old idea.
Built for the future.

The restoration of the Ukrainian House is still ongoing. Our aim is to create a professional centre for Ukrainian culture in Poland and a significant space for Polish-Ukrainian and international cooperation.

A place for culture, education, community activity, dialogue and practical support — open to the next generation.
